History of Valentines Day

The Real History of Valentines Day

For centuries Valentines Day has been the center of love and affection, with small gifts and tokens of affection passing back and forth between lovers and loved ones. But very few people know the real history of Valentines Day. Even though we now associate the holiday with love, cupids, and fanciful dreams of romance, the truth is that February 14th holds far deeper and far older traditions than one might originally think.

St. Valentine

If one looks back into historical texts of the Catholic Church, they will find that the actual history of Valentines Day revolves around the day when a saint by the name of Valentine was martyred for his faith. Apparently, Valentine was killed when he dared to defy the Roman Emperor Claudius II, and performed secret marriages for young lovers.

Other accounts claim that St. Valentine was killed when he helped Christians escape from the clutches of Roman inquisitors who were torturing and killing prisoners. Another interesting thing to note about the history of Valentines Day is that the Catholic Church actually recognizes eleven different saints named Valentine, and three of them share February 14 as their day of recognition.

Chaucer, Love Birds, and the Middle Ages

The first time in the history of Valentines Day that love and lovers are actually associated with the day is during the Middle Ages in a poem by Geoffrey Chaucer. After the famous writer mentioned the two love birds that represented the engagement of the young king Richard II to his young bride to be, Anne of Bohemia.

After this first association of love in the history of Valentines Day, the idea quickly grew popular. By the 17th century, it had become custom for young lovers to exchange small tokens and hand written love notes with each other. By the 18th century, greeting cards began to be commercially produced just for the holiday; and by the middle of the 19th century, retailers began offering special gifts for young men to present to the ladies they were suiting.

Although the history of Valentines Day isn't necessarily as romantic as we are led to believe, the fact remains that it has become one of the most popular, and commercially profitable, holidays ever. Today, men often present their wives and girlfriends with chocolates, flowers, and cards; and the day has come to be associated with the highest number of marriage proposals than any other. One fact remains true regardless of the actual history of Valentines Day - and that is the fact that this is the one day of the year when people feel the most able to express their feelings of affection for one another.

Valentines Day things to do

Valentines Day things to do: all about love for your partner

Often, finding things to do that are meaningful and pleasurable can be quite difficult to think up and so most people struggle through Valentine’s Day, though the best way to overcome this obstacle would be to understand the true meaning behind this important day and to also be able to distinguish hype from reality. In other words, Valentine’s Day should be about love for your opposite number and once you realize this, you can think of many useful Valentines Day things to do.

Kiss Her Upside-Down

One novel way of finding appropriate Valentines Day things to do is to try and kiss your partner in a different way and it certainly does not mean giving her the chocolate type kiss; rather, you may want to experiment and an option worth exploring is the upside-down kiss in which your partner needs to lie on their back while holding their head at the knees and you cane kneel behind and bend down as kiss your partner’s lips upside down.

For the more sober minded people, Valentines Day things to do could involve writing a poem or something straight from your heart that should grab your partner’s attention and move them immensely. In fact, this option with regard to Valentines Day things to do is a lot better than what you find is written on a Valentine’s Day card because it is you who are writing words that mean something to you with which you hope will inspire your partner, rather than have them read an impersonal message on a card.

Another Valentines Day things to do is to cook something special for your partner, especially a favorite food, and even if you are not a wonderful cook to begin with, it will help teach you something new and it will also impress your partner by showing how much you care for him or her. In fact, this is an ideal way of showing your respect for another and it will be sure to deeply move your partner who will appreciate how much you care and love them.

Though, these Valentines Day things to do are generally cheap and even free to do, their value is often far more than any expensive dinner or gift and most people will appreciate something that comes straight from the heart a lot more than being bought things, which is more impersonal and not as sure to touch the heartstrings as these few Valentines Day things to do.

The bottom line is that when it concerns Valentines Day things to do you need to express your love in a personal way rather than show it though giving of gifts or through something that can be bought and which won’t be truly unique, which is what Valentines Day things to do should be all about.

Valentine’s Day Treats

Homemade Valentine’s Day Treats for Kids

They say the easiest and quickest path to reach the heart is through the stomach. This is an old proverb, while having a wise significance. Valentine’s Day is a great time to show care to the little members of the family, and quite obviously, Valentine’s Day treats for kids have no better alternative. You have all the opportunities to pack their breakfast, lunch and dinner with vibrant colors and flavorful Valentine’s Day treats.

Heart Shaped Pancakes

You can offer Valentine’s Day treats to your kids in the form of a heart-shaped pancake as their breakfast. It will certainly give them a nice start to the day! When they wake up in the morning, it will definitely make them surprised. You can add a few drops of red food coloring into the batter of the pancake. You can first make a bigger size pancake within the skillet. Use the mold of a little heart to cut the large pancake into smaller heart shaped pieces. Garnish with strawberries and whipped cream.

The 'Love-Packed' Lunch

This is one of the most excellent Valentine’s Day treats for kids that you can make to make your child feel special. Pack a sandwich filled with strawberry jam and cream cheese or even peanut butter. Don't forget to make the sandwich in a heart shape. In order to make it in a heart shape, you need to take away the crust and then cut the rest of the portion of bread into a heart shape. You can cut it using a knife if you have full faith on your own talent or you may use heart shaped cookie cutters as a good substitute.

Apart from making sandwiches, you may also try making a Valentine roll-up for your children. Needless to say, this is one of the great additions for Valentine’s Day treats. Not only kids, but adults also enjoy it too. In order to make the Valentine roll-up, you need to use a tortilla and then spread red jelly on it. Then add cream cheese over the jelly and roll it. Cut the tortilla into small pieces. Dessert is also essential for Valentine Day treats. So, don't forget to include it.

Dinner of 'Affection'

You can prepare a lovely dinner with meatloaf. Mold it to give it the shape of a heart. If you are not satisfied with your own talent of molding, you can take the help of a heart-shaped pan available in kitchen supply stores. After cooking the meatloaf, chill it with crushed potatoes. You may add a few drops of red food coloring into the potatoes to give it a nice and appealing color. If you are looking for some dessert, you should try vanilla ice cream stifled in strawberry sauce. As expected, this would be one of the most excellent Valentine’s Day treats that your kids can enjoy.

Valentine's Day Themes

Valentine's Day Themes for Great Parties

If you are planning a Valentine's Day party and are thinking of how you can make it extra special, think about some Valentine's Day themes that you can work around.

Single and Loving It

There can be a bunch of friends who are celebrating Valentine's Day with you and all of you could be single by chance or choice at this point in time. So instead of moping around about the fact that you don’t have date this year, plan a great Valentine's Day theme party about the fun of being single. Get each other gifts, send each other flavors, bake a red velvet cake and talk about all the reasons you are happy that you are not in a horrible relationship this year.

Guys, Gals and Games

Go beyond the typical red heart Valentine's Day themes and plan a fun filled game night with all the men on one team and all the women on the other. You can fine tune your games depending on the type of people you invite but generally Trivial Pursuits, Pictionary, Cranium, Twister and Charades are good games that keep people of all personalities interested.

The battle of the sexes can be really fun when you have such a Valentine's Day theme party. If you feel the fervor in the party is dying out, come up with more physical games like tug of war or more intimate ones like spin the bottle. They may seem childish but that’s the whole point why they will be all the more fun. Remember to have prizes too!

Cooking Party

Have a wild Valentine's Day theme with a cooking party for your friends. Everyone loves to gather around food so plan it in such a way that people are designated ingredients in advance and each couple is responsible of creating one course of the meal while all the other watch. This Valentine's Day theme doesn’t put the burden on the host and is fun and different.

Tom and Jackie can make salad, Brendon and Debbie the appetizer, Mike and Sarah the main dish, someone else the side dish and the last couple the dessert. With the ingredient list they should be told about the time constraints and if they need a particular gadget they should bring it with them. Recipes should be easy and quick to make so that everyone is not in the kitchen the whole time. They should not need long hours of marinating or refrigeration so that they can be enjoyed together as well.

Valentine's Day and Teddy Bears

Valentine's Day and Teddy Bears with a Twist

Valentine's Day and teddy bears have gone hand in hand for a long, long time. They are popular with people of all ages and therefore have still retained their popular status. Here are a few ways you can incorporate teddy bears in to your Valentine's Day celebration this year.

Build a Bear Workshop

If you have a little girl (or boy for that matter) in your life, a trip to the Build a Bear or Teddy Bear Stuffer Workshops in a mall would be the perfect gift for Valentine's Day. At these stores, children (and adults if they want to) get to choose an animal, then they can stuff them, fluff them, sew them, name them and clothe them all in a step by step process so that they have new friend (complete with birth certificate) to take home with them. The fun can continue with lots of accessories and outfits always available and some special Valentine's Day teddy bears on sale as well.

Portrait Studio

You can get some great Valentine's Day teddy bear shots with props available at your local photo studio or you could bring in your own little loved one. Grandparents and other family members will love the studio quality shots of your children and having a prop makes it all the more easy to get natural shots instead of getting the children to just stare in to the camera. They could be hugging a bear (or fighting with their sibling over who gets to hold him) but in effect give you a great Valentine's Day teddy bear photo you can send to all the loved ones on your list.

Perfect Accessory

A cute teddy bear from Hallmark or some other similar store is the perfect little accessory for the box of chocolates or floral arrangement you are planning to give. You could hand pick the teddy bear or get one from the place where your order your gift. Chances are even the oldest recipients will smile when she sees a cute little teddy hanging on to a Valentine's Day gift.

Motif

Some women love the teddy bear motif especially if that is what they call their significant other. Teddy bear motif mugs, bath robes, pajamas or other such items make the perfect Valentine's Day teddy bear gift for people of all ages. If there is a teddy with sentimental value, or if the person is an avid collector of beanie babies, then such gifts will be even more popular.

The soldier was very fun loving and humoristic and loved to give surprise gifts to his wife. Just before the day of Valentines, the lady was crying alone and was thinking of every single touch of her husband. She was also feeling depressed when the memory of the last Valentines Day Story was knocking at her mind. But truth is stranger than fiction and love lasts for ever.

On the morning of the fourteenth of February, suddenly the lady was called by a postman. The lady came outside of her house and fell down to cry. But that crying was for the passion and love towards her lovable husband. The postman came with a flower bouquet which was posted by the soldier before the few hours of his last breath in hospital.

Valentine's Day Quotes

Be Careful With Valentine's Day Quotes

You know how there is such a thing as being politically correct? Well, there are such days in the year where you have to be romantically correct IF you are in a relationship. If you not in a relationship, then you are left off the hook for being romantically correct. Birthdays, anniversaries and Valentine's Day are those days where couples have to be romantically correct. Any Valentine's Day quotes from your mouth will come back to haunt you throughout the entire length of the relationship.

Romantically Correct Things To Say

You are best not saying anything, if you can help it, but just smile and just gaze adoringly at your partner. If that seems a bit awkward, of if your partner says something incredibly annoying like, "What are you thinking, honey?" then you better say the proper Valentine's Day quotes.

It doesn't really matter what comes out of your mouth or who wrote it, just so that it sounds romantic and twee and smooth. If you know the lyrics to your partner's favorite love song, this will serve great for your trove of Valentine's Day quotes. If you wee an English major, then when all else fails, fall back on Shakespeare for killer Valentine's Day quotes like "If music be the food of love, play on," from Twelfth Night.

Romantically Incorrect Things To Say

On this most sappy of days full of high ritual and expectations to be fulfilled no matter what the cost, you are best to stay away from funny or sarcastic Valentine's Day quotes like "Valentine's Day stinks." (Anonymous). For some reason, irony does not work on Valentine's Day, even if irony is understood and appreciated on the other 364 days of the year.

If you use these romantically incorrect Valentine's Day quotes, you will hear about it every day for the rest of however long your relationship is going to last. Your partner will tell complete strangers on the street, "Did you know what this moron said to me on Valentine's Day?!"

However, when you are finally single again and Valentine's Day rolls around, you can freely break out all of the romantically incorrect Valentine's Day quotes you like. You can laugh at all of the poor sods who still have to go through those excruciating Valentine's Day rituals. And you get to eat all of the chocolate you buy. Plato arguably put it best when he said, "Love is a grave mental disease."

Valentines Day Poems

How to Write Valentines Day Poems

When everyone is giving flowers and chocolates to their loved ones, wouldn't it be nice to know that the gift you gave your wife or girlfriend was something special that she would remember forever? Have you ever considered the idea of writing special Valentines Day poems for your lady? Valentines Day poems are a great way to show your love for your significant other on this romantic holiday; and the feelings you will evoke with your poems will be even stronger if you have written the Valentines Day poems yourself.

Make it Heartfelt

Many people are not quite sure how to go about writing Valentines Day poems for their loved ones. They don't realize that poetry is merely the expression of what you feel, written down on paper. Most people make the mistake of thinking that all Valentines Day poems have to be written in iambic pentameter (in rhyme), or as a twelve page long sonnet. They simply don't realize that any heartfelt emotions that you write down on paper can be considered poetry.

When you write your Valentines Day poems, the first thing to remember is that you don't have to be cheesy. Remember that you already love the person you are writing to, all you have to do is express that love in words. If seeing your girlfriend's face after a long period of being apart makes your heart skip in slow circles, and you can feel the blood rise to your cheeks whenever she gives you "that look", all you have to do is write it down. Those feelings are the basis for every one of the Valentines Day poems that have ever been written.

Length Doesn't Matter

One of the things that most people don't seem to understand when writing Valentines Day poems is that the length of your poem doesn't really matter. Sometimes just two short lines can express the same feeling that a thousand words do. It's not so much about the length of the poem as it is about the feelings you convey in them. Words are a very powerful thing, and sometimes a million things can be said in just three small words said in the right way.

When you sit down to write your Valentines Day poems, just remember all of the little things about your wife or girlfriend that make you love her. Once you have in mind all of the things that made you want to compose Valentines Day poems in the first place, the actual writing will be a breeze.

Valentine’s Day Menu

The Valentine’s Day Menu—Making a Memorable Meal

One of the most romantic nights of the year for any couple is Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is a great occasion for significant others to show each other just how much they are loved. One way to do this is through gifts and flowers. Another option is to plan a special day together.

One of the most special things that can be done, however, is to plan a special Valentine’s Day menu. Whether this is done instead of the other possibilities or in addition to, taking the time to plan such a meal is sure to put the cap on a wondrous day.

First Thing’s First

With any fancy meal, it is important to start off on the right foot. This means not jumping into the main course too quickly, but preparing an amuse bouche and first course to have beforehand. Going this extra step can really make the entire Valentine’s Day menu that much better.

An amuse bouche is typically just a small sample or taste—a teaser portion of something simply scrumptious. For a Valentine’s Day menu, foie gras mousse with fig syrup would serve this purpose nicely. Paired with Brut Champagne or German Riesling, there is no way you can go wrong.

For your first course, you might want to start with a salad. This is a nice beginning to any meal. However, seeing as how it is a special occasion, you should prepare a salad somewhat fancier than you might otherwise prepare. An example of such a salad is the Pear and Prosciutto Salad with Toasted Walnuts. This is sure to be an elegant and delicious addition to your Valentine’s Day menu.

The Real Deal

For the main dish of your Valentine’s Day menu, it is best to prepare meat of some kind. Yet, it should be prepared in a way that is elegant, and presentation should be taken into consideration. One idea is to prepare Hens in Half-Mourning, which is a French Dish. This dish can be paired with French Burgundy or California wine.

What You’ve Been Waiting For

Valentine’s Day is a holiday known for its sweets and treats. Therefore, the dessert portion of your Valentine’s Day menu is perhaps the most important. Though you have many options when preparing dessert, any of which would be sure to satisfy, why not try a recipe such as Poached Pears with Chocolate Raspberry Sauce? This dessert combines luscious fruit with delectable chocolate—a no miss combination!

Not the End?

A perfect Valentine’s Day menu can be the grand finale to a fabulous day of love, gifts, and celebration. But who says that has to be the end of celebration? The night is just beginning.

Valentine's Day Images

Finding Royalty-Free Valentine's Day Images For Your Website

Whether you are promoting a blog or a product, there is nothing that captures your reader's attention so much as a compelling image. These images can help break up the text, making it easier on the eyes of the reader, which keeps them wanting to read your site longer. They may even hang about to see why that compelling image was chosen, even Valentine's Day images.

Copyright Highlight

There are gazillions of Valentine's Day images on the Internet that can be easily downloaded onto your computer and then onto your blog or website. Don't make the mistake I did when I began as a freelance writer. I assumed any image that you could download off of the web was public property. If I did a post on love, heart care or dating, I'd just sprinkle the text liberally with any Clever Valentine's Day images I could find.

There are some Valentine's Day images that will refuse to download onto your computer because of formatting or copyright issues. However, this is the Internet we're talking about here. Someone somewhere is going to post an image they purchased on their personal website and not copyright it and someone else can grab it freely.

You can see how dicey this can potentially get, ESPECIALLY if you wish to use Valentine's Day images for a professional or promotional web site copy. Some professional image websites are pretty sneaky and set their images to expire after a twenty four or so hour period. All that's left in place of the Valentine's Day images are garish URLs of their websites, and a note that the admin of your site "sucks".

Royalty Free Images

The only way around all of this is to jump through the copyright hoop and go to sites that offer royalty free images, including Valentine's Day images, which are free to anyone to use. They are also called commercial use photo collections or free stock photos. Such sites include, but are not limited to, StockXchng.com, Free Images UK, Flickr Creative Commons and Everystockphoto.com.

Some places that normally charge for images, like iStockphoto.com, will often have a "free sample" section, but unfortunately their free images do contain obvious watermarks which may obscure the main Valentine's Day images. However, you do have the consolation that you won't get sued by anybody. That's not good for the heart.

If you are using images, including Valentine's Day images, just for your personal blog or personal non-revenue earning webpage, then you are free to use whatever you want, until someone decides to make a fuss for publicity reasons, like Prince's recent attack on fan sites.

Valentines Day Gifts To Make

Valentines Day Gifts To Make You Not Sleep Alone

It's the thought that counts. That old saying does not work when it comes to Valentine's Day gifts to make, as opposed to buying something. You better know what you're doing in the area of drawing, cooking or putting together your own card. When kids slap something together willy-nilly, it's cute. When an adult does it, it's pathetic. You'll definitely be sleeping alone Valentine's night.

Portraits

The most usual and effective of Valentine's Day gifts to make yourself are portraits of your beloved. You need to use colored inks or pencils, unless you are currently working on your Studio Arts major. Don’t get too flowery – a soft focus pencil study will be more effective than pictorial accuracy. You don’t want your beloved to look at the portrait and say, "Is my forehead THAT BIG???"

If you've never drawn before, now is not the time to learn. If your forte is drawing caricatures, you will not be able to do a flattering portrait of your beloved even if a gun is put to your head. Remember – the emphasis is on a FLATTERING portrait, not an accurate one. Frame it for them. You could also turn this into a unique Valentine's Day card.

Cooking A Special Dinner

This Valentine's Day gift that you can make yourself very popular with your beloved if you do it right. Even if something screws up, just the atmosphere and the obvious effort you put into it should be enough to charm. If your cooking fails, order a pizza. If you are used to cooking, then the cooking will be the easy part.

It is the atmosphere of the dining room that makes or breaks this Valentine's Day gift you make yourself. You need fancy clothes, soft music (whether classical or Barry White – or classical Barry White), flowers, a nice clean tablecloth, a clean or at least neat dining room and a bottle of champagne or wine if both of you are allowed to drink alcohol.

The effect of this Valentine's Day gift that you make yourself is generally favorable. It says, "I think you are so special that I went out of my mind cleaning and cooking and wearing clean clothes just to make you happy." You want to turn your home into a somewhat starred restaurant with the sole focus being the beloved. Foods known to be aphrodisiacs include asparagus, cucumber, vanilla, oysters and chocolate (not all together, though).

Valentines Day Gift Baskets

Creating Hand Made Valentines Day Gift Baskets

Valentines Day is the one holiday that allows you to show your special someone just how much you care about them. For most people, it is a time to buy jewelry and chocolates; but what if jewels are too expensive, and your special someone is allergic to chocolate? A gift basket is the perfect solution in cases like this, or when the person in question isn't your significant other but you still want to do something special to show them you care. If those Valentines Day gift baskets are made by hand, the sentiment will mean even more.

Why Hand Made Gift Baskets?

Hand made Valentines Day gift baskets are more special than you can imagine. Sure, anyone can run down to the florist and order a pre-made gift basket. But when you give baskets that you have put the time and effort into creating yourself, the recipient can see that you truly care; and will feel even the more special because of it.

To make your hand made Valentines Day gift baskets, the first thing you want to do is choose a theme. Try to plan your theme around the person you are making the basket for. For example, if the person you are making the gift baskets for has something in particular that they collect, such as teddy bears; you could easily plan your basket to include only those things that revolve around teddy bears.

Once you've planned the theme for your Valentines Day gift baskets, pick out several little things that follow that theme. Add one large item, such as a special Valentines Day teddy bear; and surround it with the smaller items you have chosen. Your Valentines Day gift baskets can also include small boxes of the recipient's favorite candies, as well as a few bunches of their favorite flowers.

Once you've placed everything into your Valentines Day gift baskets that you want, take some pretty red or pink cellophane sheets and center the basket in the middle of a sheet. Draw the cellophane up around the basket, and tie at the top with several strands of curly ribbon.

These Valentines Day gift baskets are quite simple to make, and don't cost an arm and leg to put together. Since handmade baskets are such a thoughtful gift, why not create one for everyone in your family? Even children will be pleased with hand made Valentines Day gift baskets when they include small toys and candies for them to discover!

Valentines Day Garland

How The Tradition Of The Valentines Day Garland Started

To get the answer to the origin of the tradition of Valentines Day garland you need to step back a little into the history. This would take you around the 17th century when flowers were most importantly used as a symbol for love and devotion. The rose in particular is dedicated to love and is considered as the favorite flower of Goddess Venus who is also the Goddess of Love and Beauty.

The Connection Between The Valentines Day Garland And Romance

In those times, the Valentines Day garland was meant to say 'I love you' in a very subtle way. All the symbols that tie it to love, sexual passion and romance have been merged into this simple way of presenting a Valentines Day garland.

However, just giving the Valentines Day garland would not be all. This is by far too simple. What you would also have to pay attention to what type of flowers (and color) are used to make this garland before having the perfect Valentine Day gift.

The first choice for flowers would be the rose which is already associated with love and passion; you have then the yellow rose that symbolizes new and ever lasting friendship. If you are fishing in the waters of love, and want to only indicate that you are interested in someone but you do not have direct access all you need to do is send him or her a bouquet of yellow roses. This would mean that you are asking for her or his friendship.

There are also flowers that say it all with only their fragrance such as posies, amaryllis, red lilies and the like. This information would be helping you to choose how you want to declare your love to your sweetheart. The Valentines Day garland is only one among so many ways to make your love known on the Valentine Day.

The Romance Is Still Growing

With every legend that backs it up or rather fuels it up, Valentines Day garland is growing more exciting as a symbolic method used to declare your love with the help of flowers. This is indeed a legacy that is handed down over so many generations celebrating love and the exhilaration of the feelings generated when you first find out you are in love.

Remember when you use flowers on the Valentine's day you can say a lot with the right choice of flowers. Add a mini-guide to the garland or with your greeting card, lest your partner miss the message sent due to ignorance about the meaning of the flowers that make the garland.

Valentines Day Flowers

The Valentines Day Flowers Have A Special Meaning

Valentine’s Day is the day when you express your love hoping that it would be reciprocated. There are many unwritten codes of conduct that are followed on this day one among which is the meaning of the Valentines Day flowers. You would think that on this day the most common flowers would be the red roses because of their beauty and their symbolism of love.

Say It With Valentines Day Flowers

There is a code in the flowers that you would be planning to offer; a code that would express your innermost feelings for the recipient without you needing to say one single word. The code comprises of types of flowers as well as color of flowers. The more you know about it, the easier would be for you to express your feelings or declare your love.

For example, if you choose to give as Valentines Day flowers a bunch (or a single one) of red roses you are saying that you are in love. If the flowers are pink, you are asking only for happiness in your friendship, if you offer yellow Valentines Day flowers it means that you are asking for your partner's friendship. In similar fashion, the yellow color flowers would mean that you are wishing her or him happiness.

The Meaning Of Other Type Of Valentines Day Flowers

You have learnt the meaning of some important and most used colors, but this is not all. There are many types of flowers that also have their own meaning, which could be used on this special day. For example, you could gift a sunflower to say that you completely admire the person. If there is someone in your life whom you totally admire – this is the way and the time to do so with a sunflower. This flower symbolizes total admiration just as the sunflower admires the sun and has eyes for nothing else.

Do you want to declare undying love? Offer your intended friend or lover a bouquet of forget-me-not flowers. When you use these flowers, you are telling the recipient 'I love you' in the most subtle and beautiful way possible. Choose a tulip – particular a red one, which means 'perfect lover' - to gift your lover and say it all without uttering a word.

In case you would think that the person who you are gifting the flowers might not know the meaning of the flowers – type and color both) - why not tip your friend with a tiny guide attached to the flowers so the meaning of the gift would not be lost.

Valentine's Day Floral Gifts

Personalizing Valentine's Day Floral Gifts

Valentine's Day floral gifts are one of the most common ways of expressing that you care for someone. However, because they are the most common, they can be the most predictable and boring gifts too.

Sure, Valentine's Day floral gifts are a safe bet for your girlfriend, wife and mother, but add some personalization to them so that it doesn’t look like a last minute thing your secretary ordered on your behalf.

Here are a few ways in which you can personalize a Valentine's Day floral gift

Handwritten Note

In an age of email and text messages the handwritten card or note is definitely appreciated and is the height of personalization. Even if you do not have the time or inclination to make a card yourself you can easily write something down in your handwriting. Putting pen to paper makes it just the more personalized than a copy and paste command on the computer.

So many people have forgotten the value of receiving something n the mail and actually slitting open an envelope and reading a card instead of it being amongst the gazillion email messages we receive every day.

Accessorize

Along with your Valentine's Day floral gift add a small gift that shows you specifically thought of the recipient. If she is into entertaining, add a little floral arrangement for the dining table kind of books so it ties in with the Valentine's Day floral gift as well as her tastes. If she is in to social work, make a donation to her favorite cause and include that message in your card. If she is into recycling or shopping, include a little tote bag with flowers on it so that she can reuse the bag on her trips to the mall and save some trees in the process. If she is a chocolate lover, include her favorite brand and type if candy instead of the standard one the online flower shop will provide.

If possible, get the Valentine's Day floral gift delivered at a time when you are sure she will receive it personally instead of being left at her office desk or on the doorstep. The actual act of receiving the gift is also as much of a joy as the actual present.

Valentine's Day floral gifts have been popular for a long, long time and are here to stay. They are not a fad that will fizzle out any time soon. However, how you present the gift will make the difference between a formal thank you and a really heartfelt appreciation that will keep you grinning from ear to ear!

Valentines Day Facts

Little Known Valentines Day Facts for Your Enjoyment and Amusement

When we think of Valentines Day, most of us have images of hearts, arrows, and small baby cupids running around in a diaper shooting people to make them fall in love in our minds. Oddly enough, Valentines Day really had absolutely nothing to do with love and romance until Geoffrey Chaucer wrote a poem for King Richard and his bride. Before that, little known Valentines Day facts state that the day originally commemorated the day Saint Valentine was beheaded for aiding Christian prisoners to escape from Roman inquisitors.

Obscure Valentines Day Facts

February 14th was originally a Roman festival day set aside for the ceremony of Lupercalia; an ancient fertility rite which was performed each year to help ensure fertile women, fertile crops, and was thought to protect fields from the wolves. A goat was killed and the hide torn into strips which were then dipped in the blood of the goat. The strips of flesh were then taken and used to spread the blood across the edges of the fields, and thrashed against the legs of the women in the town.

Some other little known Valentines Day facts include the fact that the Catholic Church actually recognizes eleven different saints named Valentine; and Valentines Day is actually in commemoration of three of those men. The first was a priest who performed secret Christian marriages in defiance of the Roman Emperor; the second was Saint Valentine who helped the Christians escape from the Roman inquisitors; and the third is mentioned very little except in reference to his name.

Still more little known Valentines Day facts include the fact that the very first "valentine" was said to have been written by the Duke of Orleans. Imprisoned, he is said to have penned a love note in rhyme to his beloved, which was then secreted away to her under the cover of darkness. This was at the beginning of the fifteenth century. It was at this same time that the day began to be associated with the day the love birds in England began their search for a mate, which is why love birds have come to be associated with the holiday.

There are so many different obscure Valentines Day facts available, these are but just the tip of the iceberg. It is also estimated that more than 24 million marriages occur each year on this day, and that more than $100 billion dollars worth of chocolates are sold for Valentines Day. Whatever the history of the holiday may be, the lesser known Valentines Day facts that you can find certainly make in an interesting one.

Valentine's Day crafts for kids

Mess-free Valentine's Day crafts for kids

Coming up with Valentine's Day crafts for kids of all ages is pretty simple to do; however keeping the children and the workspace mess-free is the hard part. So many Valentine's Day crafts for kids or activities for other holidays as well require glue, glitter and other gooey stuff that parents and teachers regret why they came up with such an idea in the first place.

A completely mess-free Valentine's Day crafts for kids may be impossible because any place you have kids, something is bound to spill, break or get squashed. However, you can minimize the chances of too much gunk all over the place if you choose these activities:

Cut Out Card

You will need red tissue paper, cardstock and safety scissors for this Valentine's Day craft for kids. Trace out a large heart template on cardstock and cut our (or help the children cut out) the template on the red tissue paper. If the kids are too little and cannot handle the flimsy tissue, they can use construction paper. However the effect looks better when it is on the somewhat translucent tissue paper.

Fold the heart into half and let the children cut out squares, circles an triangles on the seam. When you open it, you'll have a beautiful cut our heart with intricate details inside. And the best part is, each kid's Valentine's Day craft will be unique as they will have made their own designs. Mount the heart on cardstock of a different color and let the children decorate with gel pens and silver and gold markers instead of glitter glue and messy supplies.

I Love You Book Marks

Give children various magazines and ask them to cut out one 2 x 2 picture of anything they love. It could be a color, a cartoon character, a food, a dress. Then paste that picture onto a cardstock strip. Cut around the picture so that it is not a plain rectangle any longer. Decorate the blank portion of the cardstock with stickers or pre-glued foam shapes for minimal mess.
Encourage the children to write a Valentine's message on the back of the bookmark and give something useful to their parents for Valentine's Day.

Heart Pin

Get the children heart shaped cut outs to decorate with various supplies. Place the finished shape between contact paper and cut out so it looks laminated. Attach a safety pin on the back and let your child wear his creation home without his backpack getting dirty.

Valentines Day Cards

Help Your Children Create the Perfect Valentines Day Cards

Every year at Valentines Day, children celebrate by giving their classmates special handmade Valentines Day cards and treats to show their appreciation for one another. You can help your children to create the perfect handmade Valentines Day cards that won't take forever, and won't cost you a fortune, either. All you need to create these great little Valentines Day cards is a package of construction paper, a few glue sticks, some glitter, markers, and some child safety scissors.

Designing Cards

Depending on the ages of your children, you will have to create the base for their handmade Valentines Day cards. Simply pull all of the red and pink sheets out of the package of construction paper. Fold each sheet into quarters - once in half the long way; then in half again, folding the paper end to end - then fold in half once more lengthwise. If you are doing this for your child, you may want to get a sharp pair of scissors for this part. Take a marker and trace a half heart using the folded edge as your center guideline. Carefully cut your Valentines Day cards base out using your sharp scissors. When you unfold each piece, you should have a complete heart.

Next, you will let your children decorate the outsides of their heart shaped Valentines Day cards with glitter. Simply use the glue stick to create designs on one side of each heart, and allow it to sit for a moment so that the glue becomes tacky. Next, carefully shake the glitter over the glue and allow it to dry thoroughly. Once the glue has dried, carefully shake each heart over a trash can so as to remove any excess glitter.

After the glue on your children's Valentines Day cards has dried completely, they can decorate the insides with the markers. Have them write a special note to each of their friends. You can easily pick up some small packages of children's Valentines Day candies, to which you can attach each card. Be sure to send the Valentines Day cards with your child inside a paper lunch sack, so as to prevent the glitter from brushing off inside your child's backpack.

There you have it, the easiest (and cheapest) way for you and your children to create Valentines Day cards for their entire class. For just under ten dollars, your children can give their classmates special, personalized Valentines Day cards that will be remembered for many years to come.

Valentine’s Day candy

Valentine’s Day candy is the best way to win your sweetheart’s heart and mind

In the United States, St. Valentine’s Day is the second most important day after Christmas and it is also a day in the year when a great many Valentine Day’s cards are sent, and it is also estimated that as many as one hundred ninety million lovers and also friends greet one another in this way. St. Valentine’s Day owes its origins to the Roman Empire of old when a priest that was prohibited from performing marriages defied the law and consecrated marriages without proper permission. However, he was apprehended sentenced and put to death, though he did leave behind a very romantic legacy for everyone to follow that have lived on from those times to the present.

The New Trend In Greeting Sweethearts

The traditional way of celebrating St. Valentine’s Day has always been to send cards that express gratitude, love as well as friendship though it was only in the 1800s that the first Valentine’s Day card came to be sent. No doubt, the practice of sending Valentine’s Day greeting cards has been followed since then, but now-a-days even sending Valentine’s Day candy has become very popular.

In fact, Valentine’s Day candy is the best way to express one’s sentiment that most people prefer and it has thus turned out to be the most popular way of celebrating Valentine’s Day in our modern times. The reason why Valentine’s Day candy is so popular is that during the middle of February, when Valentine’s Day candy is given to those whom you love the many varieties and easy availability of candy leaves one with no choice but to opt for this sweet treat as a means to win over one’s love interest.

Since most people of the fairer sex love candy, it only stands to reason that Valentine’s Day candy would make them think and feel more kindly towards the giver, and because many shops as well as stores make candy in the form of big red hearts and more, the appeal of candy is just too overpowering to ignore. You can thus choose any type of Valentine’s Day candy that include candies filled with nuts and which are also most beautifully decorated, though of course, it must be the thought behind the candy that is sweeter rather than the candy itself.

Valentine’s Day candy is the best way to enthrall your sweethearts and when accompanied with words of devotion, they are sure to have the desired effect, and that is why young suitors also generally offer the love of their lives with candy to show how much they care for their opposite numbers.

Chocolate seems to be the favorite Valentine’s Day candy and for good reason because who would not be partial to chocolates whether dark chocolates or light ones. And, by carefully wrapping up the candy when giving it to your sweetheart, you will be able to make a strong statement that will easily win your partner’s heart and mind.

Valentines Day Activities

Planning Valentines Day Activities for Your School-Aged Children

Do your children want to plan some special activities for the day devoted to love and affection? Having a hard time coming up with ideas for Valentines Day activities? If so, you've definitely come to the right place. We've put together a list of some great Valentines Day activities for you and your kids to enjoy together, regardless of their ages.

Fun and Games for All Kids

The best Valentines Day activities always involve the whole family whenever possible, or at least several of your child's friends and classmates. This is especially so if you can get everyone together and laughing at the same time. The first of our Valentines Day activities is a fun and humorous game in which everyone tries to come up with the funniest valentine.

Give each child and adult their own folded piece of red or pink construction paper. On the inside you can write a sentimental valentine message, leaving out certain words like verbs and nouns, replacing them instead with a blank line. Under each line, write in what type of word should go there, such as "animal's name" or "color" etc. See who can come up with the funniest set of words. The winner gets a prize of a small box of Valentine's candy or a small stuffed Valentine bear.

Other favorite Valentines Day activities include pin the arrow on cupid, much like its similar counterpart involving a donkey; and Heart Scramble, in which hearts made out of different colors of construction paper are cut in half and placed inside a paper bag. Make sure that there are an equal number of halves so that each child gets one. After everyone has chosen a heart half (with their eyes closed, of course), flip an egg timer over to begin the game. The object is for each child to find their partner before the time runs out. These types of Valentines Day activities are best played outdoors, as they can become quite rambunctious.

Valentines Day activities for older children can include scavenger hunts, where folded paper hearts are hidden around the yard. Inside each heart is either a prize or a clue to where another heart may be. This game is best played in a large yard or field, so that there is plenty of room to hide the hearts; you don't want to make it too easy, after all. Older children may also enjoy Valentines Day activities that include getting to help bake special treats for their friends and family.

Symbols of Valentines Day

Valentine’s Day and Symbols of Love

Symbols of love and Valentine’s Day are all around us. Though they become more prominent around February 14, it is possible to see them any time of the year. Most people are aware of what symbolizes love and Valentine’s Day; yet, they have no idea how these icons came to represent these concepts.

Knowing why Valentine’s Day is represented by symbols like roses, hearts, and lace will help you to appreciate the holiday that much more—and it will make you appreciate the next display of affection someone has for you that much more.

All You Need Is Love

One of the most common symbols of Valentine’s Day is the heart. Long ago, it was believed that all human emotions came from the heart. Thus, when a heart was given to someone else, it meant that they were giving all of themselves to that person. Though it is now known that the brain controls emotions, the symbol has remained throughout the years.

Lace and ribbon are also commonly associated with Valentine’s Day. At first glance, it is difficult to see what correlation lace and ribbon have with Valentine’s Day. The fact that these items are very feminine makes them a symbol of love and Valentine’s Day. In medieval times, knights carried a lace handkerchief given to them by their loved one when going into battle.

Flowers, but more specifically the rose, have also long been a symbol of Valentine’s Day. The word “rose,” when rearranged is the word “eros,” which is the god of love and the root word for the word “erotic.” In poetry and literature, lovers are often compared to roses. Though most commonly thought of as being red, the different colors of roses symbolize different emotions. For example, a lavender rose symbolizes enchantment, while a dark pink rose symbolizes friendship. A red love symbolizes love, courage, and respect.

Have you ever heard a couple referred to as being “love birds?” That’s because love birds and doves are another common icon of Valentine’s Day. An ancient myth states that birds choose their mates on February 14. Doves mate for life, making them a romanticized bird, and lovebirds are known for being touchy and dependant on their mate.

A Meaningful Expression

Simply being aware of symbols is not enough. In order to fully appreciate them, it is necessary to understand where they came from. Roses, lace, lovebirds, and hearts will are well known to most—but now you know their underlying meaning.

Just take a good photo with you and get it plastered, along with a goofy saying of your choice, on mouse pads, T-shirts, coffee mugs or key chains.

Another advantage of going to the local mall for personalized Valentine's Day gifts is that you can buy yourself something as a reward for remembering to get a Valentine's Day gift this year. Your partner does not have to know about that. What happens at the mall stays at the mall (unless you max out your credit cards, that is, so be sensible).

Wind Chimes

If you think going to the mall would be too tempting to overspend, then you can still go online for personalized Valentine's Day gifts. Perhaps the most unusual, beautiful and quasi-romantic gift would be personalized wind chimes. This is not a last minute personalized Valentine's Day gift idea. You need at least a couple of weeks in advance, unless you want to fork out for express shipping.

Origins of Valentines Day

A Special Day’s Origins—the Valentine Story

Valentine’s Day is a mysterious holiday—we celebrate it every year, and yet nobody really knows where it came from or what the origins of Valentine’s Day are. What we do know is that the holiday, despite thought to be a Hallmark-holiday, is based on the legends surrounding Saint Valentine.

Saint Valentine can be traced back to Christian and ancient Roman traditions, and the Catholic Church alone recognizes three different Saint Valentines. The many myths and legend surrounding this patron saint are what gave us the holiday we today call Valentine’s Day.

Just a Tall Tale?

There are many legends about the origin of Valentine’s Day, and of Saint Valentine for that matter. One story says that Valentine was a Roman priest during the third century, who continued to perform marriages for young men and women despite the Emperor Claudius’ forbiddance of the practice. Claudius then supposedly ordered Valentine to be put to death.

This story has another ending. Instead of being put to death, some legends argue that Valentine, in fact, went to prison, where he created the first valentine. He is said to have fallen in love with a young girl who visited him, and to have written her a letter before his death. He signed the letter “from your Valentine,” coining the phrase as it is used today.

Whichever legend may be true, if any of them are at all; there are certain elements of the stories that remain true. The origins of Saint Valentine always dictate that the man was a martyr, and he is always said to be a brave and courageous hero.

Popular Practice

Though the origins of Valentine’s Day remain unclear, more is known about when Valentine’s Day first became a popular holiday. It was not until the seventeenth century that Valentine’s Day became a popularly celebrated holiday in Great Britain. At first, crude letters were written to carry on the tradition of the holiday, which made it very similar to Valentine’s Day’s supposed origins. Soon, printed cards were used instead.
In the 1700's, America first began to celebrate the holiday. The first mass-produced Valentine’s Day cards were produced in the 1840s by Esther A. Howland.

A Modern World

The origins of Valentine’s Day have survived over many years, and the holiday is still celebrated by the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Australia, and France. Though some traditions have changed, Valentine’s Day is still true to its origins in spirit.

Looking closely at the composition of a bar of chocolate you will find that a regular chocolate bar would have as much as 200 mg of theobromine and about one tenth of it is caffeine. Both addictive ingredients, both well known as mood elevators.

This is not all. There is one more extremely savvy ingredient in the chocolate and that is the phenylethylamine which is part of the natural body-produced mood enhancers called endorphins. Kid's Valentine's Day Cards

Never Pay A Lot For Kid's Valentine's Day Cards

Perhaps an entire generation felt so sorry for Charlie Brown never getting a Valentine through fifty years or more of Peanut comic strips. In response, small and extremely cheap boxes of kid's Valentine's Day cards were made. In this way, every kid that went to a school or church or other institution was assured of getting at least Valentine's Day card. No one would have to suffer like the fictional Charlie Brown ever again.

Cheaper By The Hundreds

If you go to any "dollar store" (called "pound shops" in England), any drug store, supermarket or department store beginning on New Year's Day (and sometimes earlier), you will be able to find aisles full of extremely cheap kid's Valentine's Day cards. Amounts of kid's Valentine's Day cards in the boxes vary. Since they are so small, you can easily pick up a couple of hundred for a few dollars.

These Valentines are about the size of a credit card or less, that usually come with tiny envelopes. The front contains a cheesy but cute image of a cartoon character or a generic animal, while the back contains areas to place the names of the giver and receiver. They are flimsy and easily destroyed. But that's not the point with kid's Valentine's Day cards. They just want to get something on Valentine's Day – they don’t care what.

Free Online Cards

Perhaps you only need a few kids' Valentine's Day cards instead of hundreds. You only need to send a couple out to neighborhood kids or kids you have to baby-sit on Valentine's Day, for example. In that case, buying a box of hundreds of tiny kid's Valentine's Day cards don’t make much sense. But if you have access to the Internet and a printer, you're good to go.

Go to a website called DLTK Holidays.com and you will find free kids' Valentine's Day cards to print out in cute designs. You can only print out two at a time, so it is not cost effective to use this free site if you have several dozen cards to get. The cost of printer ink and paper will far exceed any savings you might get on not buying boxed cards.

If you want to get even more economical than that, make your kids make their own darn kids' Valentine's Day cards. Give them construction paper and crayons or old magazines they can cut up. Tell them about Charlie Brown to get them inspired.

Cupid and Valentine’s Day

Cupid and Valentine’s Day - A Legend Continues

When you think of Valentine’s Day, there are many stories and traditions that come to mind. One of the most famous symbols of the holiday is cupid. Cupid continues to be referenced in modern times; yet, his presence in mythology is by no means a recent occurrence.

Cupid and Valentine’s Day have been associated together for a long time—ever since the ancient Greeks and Romans were around! In fact, the word “cupid” stems from the Latin word cupido, which means desire. The association between Cupid and Valentine’s Day comes from a specific legend that has been passed down for thousands of years.

Legend and Lore

The main reason that Cupid is associated with Valentine’s Day in modern times is because the story of Cupid is one of love. Cupid was said to have fallen in love with Psyche, a mortal. He married her, but she was forbidden to look at him. One day she disobeyed these orders, and Cupid ran away from her. To be reunited with Cupid, Psyche paid a visit to Venus, Cupid’s mother. After making her undergo several tests, Venus reunited Psyche and Cupid. Eventually, according to the story, Cupid and Psyche gave birth to a child named pleasure.

Other legends are in circulation about Cupid’s arrows. It is said that whoever is struck by Cupid’s arrow immediately falls in love with the next person they see. Supposedly, this is how Venus came to fall in love with the god Adonis. Cupid’s arrows are either golden or leaden. A golden arrow represents true love, while a leaden arrow represents wanton and lust. Sometimes, Cupid is even said to carry a torch. This torch is supposedly used to light passion between a man and a woman.

Then and Now

The Cupid associated with Valentine’s Day is quite different in appearance from the Cupid we think of today. Nowadays, Cupid is represented as a winged, naked boy carrying a bow and arrow. Though this image of Cupid complies with the idea of Valentine’s Day, it differs greatly from the Cupid of the Greek and Roman legends. This Cupid was said to be very mischievous and naughty.

A Fun Fairy Tale

Almost everyone knows that there is no such thing as a Cupid with magic arrows that can control the love and passion of mortals. Yet sometimes, especially around Valentine’s Day, some people find it nice to think that such a myth could bring them their chance at love.

Candy Bouquets for Valentines Day

Creating the Perfect Candy Bouquets for Valentines Day

With everyone giving flowers and chocolates on Valentines Day, wouldn't it be fun to give a gift that stands out from all the rest? Creating your own candy bouquets for Valentines Day is as easy as it is unique. These special bouquets can be assembled for less than ten dollars, but give the recipient a smile that is priceless. Below you will find the different items you will need to assemble your candy bouquets for Valentines Day, as well as instructions on how to put it all together.

Ingredients and Assembly

The first thing you will need to do to create your candy bouquets for Valentines Day is gather together the following:

One wicker planter
One package florists foam
One package candy sticks, available in most party supply stores
An assortment of candies and lollipops
Plastic gift basket "grass"
Red cellophane sheets
Florists wire
Silk flowers
Two foot length of wide red ribbon

Once you have gathered together all of the ingredients for your candy bouquets for Valentines Day, start by placing the florists foam into the center of the wicker planter basket. Fill the basket around the foam with the plastic gift basket grass, making sure that you completely cover the foam core. This is going to be what holds your bouquet together.

Next, take the package of candy sticks you purchased and the florists wire from their packages. To each candy stick you will attach a silk flower on the back, and a package of candy on the front. Attach the candy packages by turning them on the diagonal, and wrapping the florists wire around the corner of the package, candy stick, and flower several times. Then push each stick firmly into the florists foam. Do this with each of the packages of candy, alternating the heights of the sticks. You should have taller "flowers" in the center of your candy bouquets for Valentines Day, with increasingly shorter layers around.

Once you have placed all of the candy sticks into the foam, place a ring of lollipops around the edge of your bouquets. Simply push each lollipop stick into the foam. If you have any more of the gift basket grass left, use it to fill in any gaps. Next, place the wicker planter in the center of one of the red cellophane sheets you bought for your candy bouquets for Valentines Day, and draw the cellophane up around the sides of the planter. Leave the tops of your bouquet showing and wrap a length of florists wire around the center of your bouquet to hold the cellophane in place. Wrap the ribbon around to hide the wire, and tie into a nice bow.

That's all there is to creating the perfect candy bouquets for Valentines Day. You can tie a Valentines Day balloon to the center of each bouquet, or even to a candy stick pushed into the center. Whatever you decide to put into your bouquets, you can be sure that they will be appreciated by anyone who receives them.
